Mixed Up Maths, Ep 4: Late again!

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

Ever missed an appointment because you misread a timetable?

Well it is easily done if you don't know how to read 24 hour time. In this clip, see how to read 24 hour time and find out where it is commonly used.

Look at the other time system used -12 hour time. Find out what those letters 'am' and 'pm' really mean! Compare 12 hour time and the 24 hour time systems.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you seen time written like this 17:00 or 20:00? That's an example of time measured in 24 hour time. Do you know what time 17:00 and 20:00 would be using the commonly used 12 hour time? What time do you get up in the morning? What about bedtime? How would you write that in 24 hour time?
  2. 2.The host says his train leaves at 15:35. What time is that? What are the two commonly used time systems? What time system is used in health, transport and the military? Why is that system used? In 12 hour time what do the letters 'am' and 'pm' mean? What time is it at 6:00 and 22:00?
  3. 3.Write out a list of your daily activities starting from when you get up to when you go to bed. Record the time you do these activities in 12 hour time. Next to each include the 24 hour time. |Look at a television guide and choose your 5 favourite shows to watch. What time are they on using 24 hour time?
  4. 4.You are to write a short help guide to using a bus timetable. The aim is to help commuters understand what 24 hour time means. What information would you include to help people from misreading the timetable? You can add 12 hour clockface drawings.
