Judging literature is highly personal.

What one person loves about a book can drive someone else crazy. Some books, though, just seem to appeal to everyone! Well, almost everyone.

Find out whether this is the case with Tim Winton's novel 'Cloudstreet'.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Create a list of five books you've read that you would recommend to others. What are the reasons for your recommendations? What do you value most in the books you read? For example, do you like books that have a character you connect with or an exciting plot, or do you value a well-written book?
  2. 2.What does Marieke Hardy love about 'Cloudstreet'? What does it portray that is so appealing to her? Why is Michael Williams reluctant to re-read 'Cloudstreet'? What did it mean to him as a teenager? What does Jason Steger think is the 'great thing' about 'Cloudstreet'? Why does Judy Nunn feel like she owns this book? Why is it so close to her heart?
  3. 3.Marieke Hardy loves 'Cloudstreet' for her connection to its themes of family. Explain what you think each speaker values in literature. What do these varied responses suggest about the power of the book? Jennifer Byrne suggests that while 'Cloudstreet' mirrors aspects of Judy Nunn's life, it's also true for all of them. What does this comment imply about good literature?
  4. 4.'Cloudstreet' is a very popular novel, both critically and commercially, hence its inclusion in this Jennifer Byrne special. Come up with your own list of '10 Aussie books I'd like to read'. Which books do you want to read sometime in your life? Hopefully 'Cloudstreet' is one of them! Explain the appeal of these titles.
