Bernie and Ruben show you how to make four do-it-yourself (DIY) science toys.

Learn how to make a balancing tightrope walker, a lava lamp, a spinning spiral decoration and a cardboard boomerang.

You might need some help with a few things.


Things to think about

  1. 1.Do you have any toys that can demonstrate something in science? Maybe a toy with batteries, light bulbs, wires or switches? A toy that spins or balances? A toy that moves or flies through the air somehow? A toy that uses magnets? What do the people who invent these toys have to know about science?
  2. 2.Gravity is a force that pulls things towards the ground. Friction is a force created when two surfaces move or try to move against each other. As you watch the clip, think about how each of these toys might use the force of gravity or friction. What other forces might affect each toy?
  3. 3.How do friction and gravity both help the tightrope walker to work? How would you describe the movement of gas bubbles in a soft drink? How does the carbon dioxide gas make corn kernels move up and down in the water? Would this toy work in the same way if Ruby used corks instead of corn? Why do you think this?
  4. 4.Air heated by the candle below makes the hanging spiral move. What does this tell you about warm air? Does the same thing happen with warm liquid? How might you find out using warm and cool water? Investigate the forces that help some of your own toys to work.
