How do people celebrate Christmas?

This clip shows some of the ways Christmas was celebrated in 1983.

People sent cards, gave presents and sang carols.

Have things changed?

Things to think about

  1. 1.What kinds of things happen at Christmas time where you live? At Christmas time you might see special symbols (pictures). They might be on TV, in shops or around your area. What are they?
  2. 2.Listen to the music. Have you heard this tune before? Look closely at the Christmas cards. Are there similar pictures on most of the cards? What do you see behind the family when they are opening presents? Listen to the carol singers who are behind the door. What is their song about? What do you notice about their clothes?
  3. 3.Do you know the Christmas story? Jesus was born a very long time ago. Why might people still celebrate his birth every year? What does your family celebrate every year? Find an older person who can tell you what Christmas time was like when they were your age. Talk about what carols (special Christmas songs) they know. Why do some Christmas carols use words you are not used to hearing? This film was made many years ago. How can you tell?
  4. 4.Why do some Christmas cards show snowy weather? List as many Christmas pictures and symbols as you can. The stable, bells and candles are some examples. Talk to your family and friends about the important events they celebrate each year. Why do different families and communities have different events that are important to them?
