ABC Open: Learn some Warrgamay words

SUBJECTS:  English, Geography, Languages

YEARS:  3–4

Uncle Bill welcomes us to Warrgamay Country.

He shows us the animals that live in and around a natural waterhole he calls the 'swimming hole', and tells us the animal's Warrgamay names.

Let's find out why Uncle Bill and his family feel happy in this place.

Things to think about

  1. 1.In places like outback Australia, a natural waterhole can be a great place to cool off. What type of animals might we find living in a place like this? The Warrgamay people have their own traditional language. What are some Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander words that you know?
  2. 2.This clip was filmed in Broadwater, Abergowrie State Forest. What state is this in? Listen for three Warrgamay words that Uncle Bill uses. Say them aloud. How does Uncle Bill feel about being at the swimming hole? What words does he use to describe how he feels when he is there?
  3. 3.Draw a picture to show Uncle Bill and his family enjoying the swimming hole. Uncle Bill says that his family have a good night's sleep when they come here. Can you think of some reasons why? Locate Broadwater, Abergowrie State Forest using a suitable source. Describe how you could get there if you were to visit this area.
  4. 4.Write a story about the animals that live in and around the swimming hole. Use the Warrgamay names that you have learnt. Think about the adventures that the animals may have had in this place and the people that they might have seen.
