A sulfur-crested cockatoo
Pet Superstars: This cocky rocks

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Meet Max and Cocky, his pet sulphur-crested cockatoo.

Discover how Max handles his cheeky pet.

Find out what body part he uses that has earned this cockatoo the title 'the destroyer'.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What body parts do all birds have? What kinds of birds do you see around your place? How do you feel about keeping a wild bird as a pet? How would you look after a pet bird?
  2. 2.Look closely at the shape of Cocky's beak and feet. What other physical features do you see? What things does Cocky eat? What kind of movements can Cocky make? Where does Cocky sleep?
  3. 3.Why do you think Cocky chews things? How would this behaviour help wild cockatoos to survive? How is Cocky's life as a pet different from a wild cockatoo's? What things does Max have to know to care for Cocky and keep him healthy? Try moving like a cockatoo. See if someone can guess what animal you are.
  4. 4.Draw a picture of a sulphur-crested cockatoo. Label the features that all birds have such as wings, feet and beak. Circle the features that make the sulphur-crested cockatoo different from other birds you know. Make a model of a cockatoo's beak and feet from dough. How do these parts help a cockatoo get its food?
