Pet Superstars: A pig in high heels?

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Meet Trotsky the pet pig.

Look at him carefully and find out more about pigs as pets.

See how Trotsky is looked after and why he is a much-loved family pet.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What do pigs look like? What do you know about pigs? Would a pig make a good pet?
  2. 2.Look closely at Trotsky the pig's features. For example, what shape is he? What is his body covering? How many toes does he have? Look at his snout (nose). What shape is it? Is his tail curly? Can you hear the sounds Trotsky makes? What words describe these sounds?
  3. 3.Draw a picture of a pig, to show its features. Show its body shape, snout, hooves and tail. Pigs love to nest and dig. They can't sweat and get sunburnt easily. If you kept a pig outside, what would you provide for it?
  4. 4.A pig would make an interesting pet. Think about where you live. Would you be able to keep a pig there? What would be good about your place if you were allowed to have a pig as a pet? What would be bad?
