Pet Superstars: Will Meeko grow up to be like his dad?

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Meet Meeko the kitten.

Listen as Lockie describes why he chose a kitten for a pet.

Find out what he likes about cats.

Look for the photo of Meeko the kitten and its father.

Do Meeko and his dad look at all alike?

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you seen kittens with their parents? If you have, what did you notice about them? How do kittens grow and change?
  2. 2.Describe Meeko's features, such as his body, tail, fur, ears nose and legs. Look at the photo of Meeko the kitten and his father. In what ways is Meeko the kitten similar to his parent? Lockie thinks Meeko will look like his dad. How will the kitten Meeko need to change to look more like his father?
  3. 3.Meeko the kitten is the offspring of the adult cat also called Meeko. Draw a picture of the adult (parent) and the offspring (kitten). How are they similar? Compare your picture to the offspring and adult of a different type of animal such as a frog, butterfly or chicken. What do you notice?
  4. 4.Make a chart of different pet animals. Which offspring look similar to their parents? Which offspring look very different? What stages of growth do they go through? How long does it take for each offspring to grow into an adult?
