For the Juniors: Celebrating a first birthday

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  F–2

It's Samantha's first birthday and her Vietnamese family is planning a very special celebration.

Discover what happens at a Vietnamese first birthday celebration.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What is special about turning one year old? Have you been to a first birthday celebration for a family member or friend? Do you have some photos of your own first birthday? How did your family celebrate?
  2. 2.Notice how Samantha's family prepare for her first birthday. How can you tell that this is a very important event for a Vietnamese family? What foods are being prepared? Why is food offered to the spirits of ancestors (family members who are no longer alive)? What do Samantha's grandparents pray for?
  3. 3.Find out how your family celebrated your first birthday. Was it like Samantha's? What was the same and what was different? Find out about other ways that families celebrate special days. Why do different families have different traditions?
  4. 4.Draw or record a story about your first birthday celebration. Imagine you had to tell the story of someone else's birthday celebration. What questions would you ask them to find out about it?
