Grains of rice
For the Juniors: How does rice get to the supermarket?

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Do you like brown rice or white rice?

Do you know why they look different?

This clip shows how rice grains from the farm are cleaned, milled and packed into bags.

Discover how many different foods can be made from rice.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What is your favourite way to eat rice? How many different foods can you think of that are made with rice?
  2. 2.What is done to rice from a farm to get it ready to pack and sell in a shop? Try to remember all the steps. How is brown rice changed to make white rice?
  3. 3.What makes brown rice better for you (more nutritious) than white rice? What foods did you see that are made from rice? How is the rice changed to make these foods?
  4. 4.Ask an adult to help you cook some rice. With the adult, look at the rice and taste it a few times as it cooks. Tell someone (or write or draw) how the rice changes each time you taste it. You could make a table with different rows for 'look', 'feel' and 'taste'.
