For the Juniors: How do you make bread?

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Have you ever made bread?

This clip shows a girl learning to make bread at home with her mother.

You will also see how different types of bread are made.

Things to think about

  1. 1.How do you like to eat bread? What are some of the types of bread that you know? What things (ingredients) might you need to make bread at home?
  2. 2.What ingredients are put into the bread dough? Watch how the dough changes as it is mixed and kneaded. Which ingredient makes the bread dough rise? Notice how some of the other breads are made.
  3. 3.Think about the way different breads are made. Do people all make bread the way the girl and her mother do? What things are the same in how they make it? What things are different? How many different types of bread do you eat? Ask other people what sorts of bread they eat.
  4. 4.Ask an adult to help you make some bread at home. Does the dough weigh the same after it rises? What does this tell you? Make up a list of questions about making bread. Visit a bakery and ask the baker these questions. Why is it important for a baker to know these things?
