First Tuesday Book Club: The Catcher in the Rye

SUBJECTS:  English

YEARS:  9–10

Have you ever addressed big questions in your life using the character in a novel as your guide?

Brendan Cowell does.

Find out how as he discusses JD Salinger's 'The Catcher in the Rye' with the First Tuesday Book Club.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Being a teenager can be a time of questioning. Particularly when it comes to rules and regulations and parents and school. What things do you and your friends question in your lives? And what do you do about finding answers?
  2. 2.The panellists talk about Holden Caulfield's 'voice' in the 'The Catcher in the Rye'. What do you think the concept of 'voice' means? List reasons why each of them find Holden's 'voice' so compelling. What writing technique does Salinger use to involve the reader directly in Holden's story?
  3. 3.Brendan says that reading 'The Catcher in the Rye' changed his life. How? Discuss whether it is a good idea to let a character influence you so much. Brendan mentions that Salinger wrote many unpublished manuscripts and burnt them. What if you found one of these manuscripts before they were burnt? What sorts of stories and writing techniques do you think Salinger might have created in this manuscript that may be similar to the ideas and techniques he explored in 'The Catcher in the Rye'?
  4. 4.Imagine that you are Holden Caufied in 'The Catcher in the Rye'. You are in New York. Write a blog suitable for your ten year old sister Phoebe to read. Write about the highs and lows of your time in the big smoke. Note some of the ways you had to change your own writing style. How did you re-create the voice of the 'real' Holden?
