Count Us In, Ep 4: Ordinal number: first through to sixth

SUBJECTS:  Maths

YEARS:  F–2

Dodly and Flynn explore counting with ordinal numbers from first through to sixth.

Investigate the order of ice-cream on an ice-cream cone, sheep being shorn and playing 'pass the parcel'.

Where did the missing birthday cake go?

Could it be the prize in pass the parcel?

Things to think about

  1. 1.What was the first thing you did this morning? What was the second thing you did? What was next? Get some friends together. Line up in order from smallest to tallest. Who is first? Who is second? Who is third? Count the rest of the line in order (fourth, fifth, sixth, etc.) Who is last?
  2. 2.Pause the clip after the boy gets ready for school. What did he do first? What did he do second and so on? What did he forget to do?
  3. 3.Collect a set of things and put them in order. Draw them and label them 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on.
  4. 4.Fold a piece of paper in two, then in three the other way, so you end up with six parts when you open the paper up. Label each part in order from first to sixth. Draw or make a list of six things you need to do to get ready for school, in order from first to sixth.
