How can you tell when rain is on the way?

Some animals seem to know when wet weather is coming.

This clip explains some different ways that people can tell it's going to rain.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Can you remember the last time it rained where you live? What did the sky look like? What else do you remember? How might you have to change your plans when it rains?
  2. 2.Which type of clouds tell you that rain is on the way? Listen to the four people tell how they know rain is coming. Have you noticed any of these things yourself? Which animals change their behaviour (what they do) when it's going to rain?
  3. 3.Why do people have to drive more carefully when it rains? What are some ways that rain might affect your daily life? Ask some people you know how they tell if it's going to rain. Ask them what it feels like, looks like, sounds like and smells like when rain is coming.
  4. 4.Where might you find a weather forecast? Watch, listen to or read a weather forecast each day for a week. Is the forecast always right about the weather? Why do you think this is? Try to find out how scientists forecast the weather?
