Elliot and the Surfing Scientist: Hydrogen and its properties

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  7–8, 9–10

Imagine the possibilities if we could turn the most abundant element in the universe into a source of fuel.

Watch as the Surfing Scientist, Ruben Meerman, investigates the properties of hydrogen and then demonstrates its potential as a fuel when he sets fire to hydrogen-filled soap bubbles.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Hydrogen is a colourless and odourless gas. What else do you know about hydrogen and how is it used?
  2. 2.What happens to the first bubble Ruben makes? Why do the hydrogen bubbles float straight up? Ruben gives two similar examples of 'floating' (relative density)? What are they? What are the by-products of the hydrogen bubble when it burns?
  3. 3.Write a chemical equation for the burning of the hydrogen bubbles. Ruben added a white substance to a liquid to create the hydrogen bubbles, but electrolysis is another way to create hydrogen gas. Find out more about how hydrogen gas can be made using electrolysis.
  4. 4.Ruben mentioned the potential for hydrogen gas as a fuel that generates no pollution. What problems can you see with using hydrogen as a fuel? Investigate the latest technology related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel. Do you think hydrogen will be used as a fuel soon or not?
