BTN: Storing data in a 'cloud'

SUBJECTS:  Science, Technologies

YEARS:  5–6, 7–8

Explore how you can access all of your personal files from any electronic device, anytime.

See how cloud computing makes it no longer necessary to have separate copies of your photos, music and documents on every device you use.

Watch this clip to find out more about cloud technology and the future of data storage and retrieval.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever worked on an assignment and school but needed to finish it at home? How did you save your file and access it again at home? Did you use a USB drive? Did you email it to yourself? Perhaps you used a 'storage cloud'?
  2. 2.The presenter describes how cloud technology makes any computer seem like your own, with all of your personal files on hand. How is this possible? If your data in no longer stored on individual devices, where is it stored?
  3. 3.How have portable devices such as laptops, MP3 players, smart phones and tablet computers further created a need for cloud technology? Why is data centre security so important with cloud technology? List the measures data centres take to ensure information is kept secure.
  4. 4.Pretend you are the first person to think of cloud technology. Create a brochure or digital presentation that could be used to sell your idea to a big information technology company. Describe how the technology will change how people live and work.
