For the Juniors: Measure ingredients to make a cake

SUBJECTS:  Maths, Technologies

YEARS:  F–2, 3–4

Sarah is following a recipe.

There are some different units of measure used in the recipe. Watch the video to see what these measurement words are.

How much of each ingredient is needed? How are the ingredients combined to make the cake?

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever used a recipe to help cook a type of food? What measurement words (units of measurement) might we find in a recipe? How do you follow a recipe?
  2. 2.Look at the recipe Sarah is following. What information does it show? What are the main ingredients? What are the units of measurement used in the recipe? What do you think Sarah is making?
  3. 3.Sarah's recipe used 1 and 1/4 cups sugar, 1 and 3/4 cups self raising flour, 2 tablespoons cocoa, 4 tablespoons butter, 1/2 cup milk, 2 eggs, pinch of salt, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence and 1/2 teaspoon of bicarb soda. Which ingredient did she use the most of and which the least of? Find a way to put the ingredients in order, from most to least.
  4. 4.Find a set of measuring cups and measuring spoons and measure out Sarah's recipe using sand, rice, blocks or even the real ingredients. If you wanted to double the recipe, how much of each ingredient would you need? With adult help, follow a recipe to make a favourite food.
