Kids in the Garden, Ep 15: Growing plants indoors

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  5–6

How would you create a tropical jungle in the middle of a cold, windy city?

How can you grow plants from cold climates in a place with a hot climate?

Could you trick a plant into flowering whenever you want it to?

Watch this clip to discover how to create suitable conditions for growing plants indoors.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What do you need to consider if you are growing plants indoors? How are conditions indoors different from conditions outdoors? What care is required to create the best conditions for plant growth?
  2. 2.What conditions are created by the huge glass roof where the indoor forest plants are grown? How would that compare with conditions outside? A watering system, stream and ventilator have been added. Why? How do conditions vary for the different types of plants shown growing in the greenhouses?
  3. 3.Nick calls the space under the glass dome a 'microclimate'. Can you explain why this word is used? Create a chart to compare the different conditions required to grow desert plants and tropical plants. Identify the scientific knowledge you would use to successfully grow these plants indoors, away from their natural environments.
  4. 4.Create a flowchart to record the steps in making a terrarium. Select a desert environment or a tropical environment. Consider the steps needed to create the right conditions for the type of plants chosen. Follow your steps to create a terrarium with adult help.
