Food plays an important role in constructing ideas about cultural identity.

This clip explores how the recent growth of interest in 'bush tucker' is generating greater understanding of Aboriginal peoples' cultural identities.


Things to think about

  1. 1.What foods form a part of your own cultural identity? What do these foods, and the traditions associated with them, suggest about your culture?
  2. 2.What foods are sourced from central Australia? What do the images suggest about how these products are traditionally harvested? What does the ethno-ecologist tell you that she learns on her trips 'to country'? What is meant by the 'hidden harvest'? What is her vision for the future and what does this suggest about the way Aboriginal cultures are commonly seen today?
  3. 3.How would you characterise the representation of Aboriginal culture in this clip? What role does bush food play in changing people's understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their cultures?

Choose another native ingredient from Outback Pride's range and investigate its origins. What can you find out about the Aboriginal people from this region and how they use this ingredient?
