Outback House: Preparing for a wedding

SUBJECTS:  History

YEARS:  5–6

Discover how the station prepares for a wedding.

Imagine leaving your home to travel back to a time over 150 years ago, to live and work on an outback farm. Sixteen Australians take part in a reality TV show about life on Oxley Downs, a sheep station built to look and work as a real station would have in the 1860s.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Have you ever been to a wedding? What happens at weddings? How do we know what weddings were like in the past?
  2. 2.Observe the preparations for Peter and Louisa's wedding. Who is involved in preparations? What jobs do they do? What foods will be eaten? How is the homestead decorated? What else is being done to get ready? How is the 1860s station wedding similar to and different from weddings today?
  3. 3.What do you think about this TV-show clip as a historical source? If you were researching colonial wedding traditions, what 'primary sources' (sources created at the time) would be useful? Find three pieces of evidence that confirm the historical accuracy of this clip. Did you find any evidence that the clip was not accurate?
  4. 4.Imagine you are a guest at an Australian wedding in the 1860s. You have been asked to write an article for a colonial newspaper, describing the event. What do you need to know? Research your questions and prepare the article. Include illustrations or photos. Note your sources.
