Four Corners: Margaret Valadian interviewed in 1967

SUBJECTS:  English, History

YEARS:  9–10

What is the role of interviewers who explore social issues?

In this 1967 clip from Four Corners, Margaret Valadian is recognised as the first Aboriginal Australian graduate of the University of Queensland.

Here, in the middle of the panel discussion she is questioned by Robert Moore about her personal and professional life.

Things to think about

  1. 1.How does the media influence our ideas and attitudes? How does it reflect prevailing attitudes? Have you ever felt uncomfortable about the nature or tone of questioning as you've watched an interview? If you have, how might you have approached the interview differently?
  2. 2.Reflect on the first camera shot as Robert Moore poses a 'direct' question to the young woman fresh out of university. How might the question be viewed as insensitive? What two other questions does Moore ask? How does he approach his interviewing role as he asks them? Does the national broadcaster reflect the beliefs and principles of society, does it seek to inform them, or both?
  3. 3.Consider Margaret Valadian's responses to the questions about her personal and professional life. How is this clip valuable to an investigation of the civil rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the year of the1967 Referendum? Had Australia not been declared 'Terra nullius' (ie land belonging to no one), might people's perceptions and attitudes towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people be any different today?
  4. 4.Research the life of Margaret Valadian, concentrating on the following inquiry questions: When and where was she born? What did she do after graduating from university? Did she accomplish the goals outlined in this interview? Write a report explaining why Margaret Valadian is a 'significant Australian'.
