Feathers, Fur and Fins: Observing a koala

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  F–2

Join Don Spencer as he talks about one of Australia's most popular animals.

Observe koalas as they walk, climb and jump to find food in the bush.

Discover why koalas rarely drink.

Things to think about

  1. 1.What do you know about koalas? What do they need to live? Where might you see a koala?
  2. 2.Don says that the koala is a fussy eater. What do you think he means? Watch how the koalas climb and jump in the trees. What body parts help them do this? Why might it be safer to live in a tree? How is the baby koala the same as and different from its mother?
  3. 3.Draw a koala after carefully looking at its features. Label its body covering and the parts that help it live in gum trees. Use your drawing to explain what you know about koalas to someone else. Tell them about what koalas eat, where they live and how they stay safe.
  4. 4.Draw a picture of an adult koala and a baby koala. Find out how a koala has its young. Compare a koala with another Australian animal like a wombat or kangaroo. How are they alike? How are they different? Draw your ideas or act out how each animal moves, searches for food and eats.
