BTN: The Moon landing

SUBJECTS:  Science, Technologies

YEARS:  5–6, 7–8

Some say landing on the Moon is as one of humanity's greatest achievements.

Learn about the history of the Moon landing and some of the challenges faced by scientists.

See actual footage of the astronauts on the Moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission.

Things to think about

  1. 1.If someone said to you that landing on the Moon is one of humanity's greatest achievements, would you agree or disagree with them? What arguments could you see on both sides?
  2. 2.Listen for the famous Moon landing quote. What is the significance of this quote? What challenges did NASA scientists face in getting an astronaut on the Moon? We hear the astronauts communicating with NASA. How was this achieved?
  3. 3.The Moon has no atmosphere. What issues does this create for astronauts? How would these be overcome? Think about the motion of the Moon relative to Earth. What did scientists need to take into consideration when putting an astronaut on a specific location on the Moon?
  4. 4.How has the clip helped you answer the question 'Is landing on the Moon one of humanity's greatest achievements?' Research the Mars landing of 2012. What challenges were overcome to get a rover module to land on Mars? What do scientists expect to learn from this mission?
