ABC News: Wine-grape growing and climate change

SUBJECTS:  Science

YEARS:  5–6, 9–10

View vineyards of the Yarra Valley region of Victoria in a news clip from 2006 and discover a warming climate's consequences for the region's wine-grape growers.

This clip examines some of the ways these growers can adapt to climate change. An environmentalist also gives views on climate change and issues politicians with a call to action.

Things to think about

  1. 1.Winemakers grow grape varieties that are suited to their region. So what impact might a warming climate have on the wine-making industry?
  2. 2.It's suggested that wine-grape growers can adapt to the rising temperatures in two ways. What are they and what do you think about these suggestions?
  3. 3.How have the wine-grower and the environmentalist in this clip responded to issues around climate change? How do they differ? Select a wine-growing area of Australia and find out what grape varieties are grown there. Pretend you are a wine-grower in that region and devise an action plan for how you will respond to a warming climate over the coming decades.
  4. 4.Research how other agricultural industries might be affected by climate change. Investigate measures that could be taken to reduce climate change.
