Game: Piñata Party Tens (2-digit place value)

Posted

Subjects: Maths
Years: F–2, 3–4

The goats and their friends are having a party, but they need your help to reach the piñata.

As a team, use your knowledge of tens and ones place values to help the goats release the treats from the piñata and have the GOAT party!

Mathematical ideas and strategies this game supports:

  • Increasing and decreasing the value of 2-digit numbers.
  • Identifying the value of a digit based on its position in a numeral.
  • Mentally adding and subtracting multiples of 10 or 1 to a 2-digit number.
  • Comparing different ways of representing 2-digit numbers.
  • Unconditional probability.

How to play

Piñata Party Tens is designed to be played as a team but can also be played solo.

This game does not use scoring or points. The objective of the game is to hit the target number in fewer than twenty turns.

  1. 1.The teacher starts by choosing a level to play, e.g. Level 1.
  2. 2.The game begins by generating a 2-digit target number, e.g. 67. This represents the piñata. A second 2-digit number represents the starting point, e.g. 23.
  3. 3.The starting number is visualised by a line of goats representing tens and a line of bunnies representing ones, e.g. for 23, it would be 2 goats and 3 bunnies.
  4. 4.The target and starting point numbers are also shown on a number line at the bottom of the screen. This can be closed at any time.
  5. 5.In Level 1, the aim is to add or subtract numbers to your starting point to reach the target. The class should discuss what they think they need to reach the target.
  6. 6.Use the Go button to generate a random number between 0 and 9. Students can then choose to add or subtract this many ones or tens to help reach the target. For example, if they roll a 4, they can add or subtract 4 ones or 4 tens. Students should discuss the best number to add or subtract. For example, adding 40 is reflected on the number line and 4 "tens" goats add themselves to the piñata line to reflect the changed values.
  7. 7.In Level 1, they may overshoot the target in any direction as long as they stay within the parameters of the number line (1–100).
  8. 8.In Level 2, players can only use addition or subtraction, and therefore they may not overshoot the target.
  9. 9.

Players can continue to play normally or aim to finish the round using the "GOAT of Destiny" button. This button is the final turn and requires the player total to be achievable within a single turn, i.e. 1–9 or 10–90 points away. If they choose the correct place value to match the target, they win the game.
