Teacher guide Scaffolding pedagogy: improving mathematics teaching and learning

TLF ID S7090

This is a teacher resource describing an initiative to build the mathematics content knowledge and pedagogies of teachers to improve numeracy learning outcomes for Aboriginal students in four primary schools. It describes the method used including the development of teachers' content knowledge of number through the Big Ideas in Number program (Siemon 2006) and use of the Accelerated Literacy (AL) approach (Gray 2007) to develop students' numeracy language and mathematical thinking. The resource describes the results including improved student learning outcomes in numeracy most noticeable in Foundation to year 2 students. The resource also discusses the lessons learned, the next steps and the research underpinning the program and provides references to relevant readings.

Educational value
  • This resource may be useful in supporting the mathematics learning area. It describes strategies to develop teacher content knowledge and pedagogy leading to improved numeracy outcomes for Aboriginal primary students. The resource explains that the Big Ideas in Number program was used to provide the mathematical content knowledge and the pedagogical content knowledge while the lessons were planned using Accelerated Literacy structures to improve the students' numeracy language and mathematical thinking.
  • This resource might assist teachers in addressing aspects of the Numeracy general capability. It provides useful guidelines for improving numeracy for Aboriginal learners, such as becoming aware of the specific needs of Aboriginal students, encouraging the involvement of the local community, encouraging classroom lesson observation to allow teachers to give and receive non-judgmental feedback, and focusing on the language of mathematics to enable students to better express their ideas. It includes a case study illustrating the improvement shown by one student and provides references to readings relevant to early years and primary numeracy.
