Teacher guide Accelerated Indigenous Mathematics

This is a teacher resource about the Accelerated Indigenous Mathematics (AIM) program developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students found to be underachieving in mathematics in years 7 to 9. It describes the three-year program to develop understandings of years 3-9 mathematics, replacing the regular program for years 7-9, and outlines the strategies used including development of culturally appropriate modules based on authentic contexts. The outcomes described include improved student attendance and engagement, a decrease in behavioural problems, increased classroom discussion and improved student understanding of mathematics. The resource also discusses the lessons learned, the next steps and the research underpinning the program.

  • This resource may be useful in supporting the mathematics learning area. It describes strategies that were found to improve student mathematics outcomes for years 7 to 9 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. These strategies include teacher professional development covering theory, pedagogy, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, research and data-gathering processes, and collaboration with parents and community to run community activities in mathematics.
  • This resource might assist teachers in addressing many aspects of the Numeracy general capability. It provides useful guidelines for improving numeracy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners, for example, using resources based on authentic contexts and focusing on learning using all the senses with an emphasis on kinaesthetic activity. It provides references and links to further readings relevant to numeracy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
