Teacher guide Accelerated Indigenous Mathematics

This is a teacher resource about the Accelerated Indigenous Mathematics (AIM) program developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students found to be underachieving in mathematics in years 7 to 9. It describes the three-year program to develop understandings of years 3-9 mathematics, replacing the regular program for years 7-9, and outlines the strategies used including development of culturally appropriate modules based on authentic contexts. The outcomes described include improved student attendance and engagement, a decrease in behavioural problems, increased classroom discussion and improved student understanding of mathematics.   • This resource may be useful in supporting the mathematics learning area. It describes strategies that were found to improve student mathematics outcomes for years 7 to 9 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. These strategies include teacher professional development covering theory, pedagogy, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, research and data-gathering processes, and collaboration with parents and community to run community activities in mathematics.
