Educational value
  • The broad strategy outlined in this resource may be of use in supporting the English and mathematics learning areas, particularly in student attainment of the F to 6 achievement standards. The resource notes increased enrolments, improved attendance rates for Aboriginal students, and growth in NAPLAN scores. It is anticipated that these will lead to significant growth in Aboriginal achievement of the achievement standards. The results of the Best Start literacy and numeracy assessments have shown that the early transition-to-school program has had an effect on Aboriginal students' foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
  • The resource is useful in the detail it gives in the Results, Lessons Learned and Next Steps sections about how the overall strategy has improved the school's connection with its Aboriginal families and the region's Aboriginal community and how the transition programs in particular have affected Aboriginal preschoolers. The resource illustrates this well with an Aboriginal education worker's account of the effect of the Early Birds program in improving one boy's skills and readiness for the first year of schooling.
