This teacher resource describes a strategy to raise numeracy standards in 12 Catholic secondary schools in Western Australia identified as having significant numbers of years 7-9 students in the lower achievement bands for the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) numeracy tests. The method included analysing NAPLAN data; selecting numeracy coordinators; rating the impact of barriers to numeracy; developing improvement strategies and teacher professional learning. Results included an overall improvement in NAPLAN results. The resource discusses the lessons learned and provides references to relevant readings.

  • This resource may be useful in supporting the mathematics learning area. It describes factors that were found to improve student numeracy outcomes in the NAPLAN numeracy tests. Selected numeracy coordinators drove data analysis, facilitated the identification of barriers to numeracy and supported the development of improvement strategies. There was also teacher professional learning.
  • This resource might assist teachers in addressing many aspects of the Numeracy general capability. It is useful in describing the collaborative approach taken by teachers and curriculum leaders to develop strategies for improving numeracy outcomes, informed by school-based data. The strategy included appointing extra support teachers to assist students with low levels of numeracy achievement, appointing mentors for teachers and adopting online resources to promote student engagement.
