Teacher guide Coaching and whole-school commitment improve numeracy outcomes

This teacher resource describes whole-school strategies to improve numeracy outcomes at Moana Primary School in South Australia. Strategies included appointing a full-time numeracy coach to act as coordinator and form collaborative partnerships with teachers; using diagnostic testing to inform programming; and developing numeracy pedagogy based on the Big Ideas in Number program (Siemon 2006). Outcomes included improved National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) numeracy results and improved teacher pedagogical content knowledge. The resource discusses the lessons learned and outlines research supporting the coaching model.
