Teacher guide ACTION: improved outcomes in numeracy

This teacher resource describes strategies used to improve numeracy outcomes in 11 Catholic primary schools in Tasmania. The strategies include teacher professional development, building curriculum leadership and encouraging home-school partnerships. The results include increased teacher confidence and proficiency in mathematics, increased curriculum leadership expertise, improved student learning outcomes and greater parental engagement. The resource discusses the lessons learned from this ACTION (Accelerating Catholic Tasmanian Schools to Improve Outcomes in Numeracy) initiative and outlines relevant research findings as well as providing references and links to readings.

It describes strategies found to improve student numeracy outcomes on a range of measures, such as the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) numeracy tests. These strategies include improving teachers' mathematical confidence and increasing curriculum leadership expertise through teacher professional development.
