It describes the school's journey of pedagogical change.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for schools seeking to improve their students' results in literacy and their attainment of both the Literacy general capability and the years F-6 English achievement standards in relation to reading. It is particularly valuable for schools who have had unsuccessful experiences with literacy intervention programs in the past and whose teachers are disillusioned with such programs. It shows how Accelerated Literacy empowered teachers as change agents, how teacher mindsets moved from what students can't do to what they can do, and how substantial improvements in both reading levels and skills were achieved, especially for boys.
  • The resource has clear links with the implementation of the English curriculum for students at risk in literacy. Actions include: the use of age-appropriate texts with rich, literate language, not simplified language; working on one focus text for an extended period; sequential teaching strategies that begin with orienting the students to the text; and the use of questioning as a teaching tool rather than a testing tool. The Accelerated Literacy strategy is particularly relevant for English content descriptions focusing on reading comprehension in the Literacy strand for the primary years.
