Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for teachers and schools seeking to improve their students' results in literacy, in particular the attainment of the Literacy general capability and the years F-7 English achievement standards. In describing the South Australian Accelerated Literacy Program, the resource identifies elements of Accelerated Literacy that have a proven record of success, such as professional learning experiences for teachers and school leaders, strong coaching support for teachers, rigorous and consistent implementation, and the program's capacity to support a whole-school literacy approach.
  • The resource has clear links with the implementation of the Englishcurriculum for students at risk in literacy. Actions include: the use of age-appropriate texts with rich, literate language, not simplified language; working on one focus text for an extended period; sequential teaching strategies that begin with orienting the students to the text; the use of questioning as a teaching tool rather than a testing tool; and an overall pedagogy that makes explicit for students the core communication skills of talking, viewing, thinking, reading, writing and spelling.
