Teacher guide Linking school targets to classroom practice

TLF ID S7030

This teacher resource describes a successful whole-school approach by Rosemeadow Public School in New South Wales to enhance the reading and comprehension skills of years 3-6 students. Assessment for learning was used to identify desired results, develop whole-school targets, devise a reading and comprehension rubric, adjust curriculum and instruction, determine which students needed support or extension, and review progress. The resource is organised in eight sections: Summary; Target student group; Method; Results; Lessons learned; Research base; Further reading and links; and Contacts.

Educational value
  • This is a valuable resource for teachers and schools seeking to improve their students' attainment of the years 3 to 6 English achievement standards in relation to reading. It shows how 'backward mapping' from assessment data drove school improvement planning and how the resultant improvement targets led in turn to the assessment rubric. The rubric clarified the skills and knowledge that would be developed, and how well they would need to be performed, for students, parents and teachers.
  • The Rosemeadow Public School strategy is a powerful tool for teaching and learning reading and comprehension in English, but also for teaching and learning content in any learning area for any school grade. The resource demonstrates that the effectiveness of teachers increases as they seek feedback from students and their peers and use the feedback to adjust approaches to teaching and learning. Students begin to regulate their own learning goals in response to a differentiated curriculum and explicit feedback on their progress.
