Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a useful resource for schools interested in enhancing their implementation of the English curriculum, especially the Responding to literature sub-strand, by seeking support from Books in Homes Australia or funding the program themselves. The books provided to students are written in Standard Australian English with 25 per cent written by Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander authors. The range includes picture books, novels, non-fiction books, drawing books, how-to books and special interest books, and they are inclusive and culturally and age-appropriate.
  • The resource highlights the importance of books at home for students' development of the literacy general capability (and incidentally for the attainment of the English achievement standards). It points to research in Australia and overseas showing that the culture of reading in the home forms a strong foundation for the students' literacy development.
