In this sequence of two lessons, students investigate how far they can jump and explore the jumping distance of a range of animals. Students first estimate the distance they can jump, then undertake an investigation by jumping using a range of techniques. Class data is recorded and displayed and students compare their jumping distances. They then learn about the jumping distance of several animals, and use the concept of scale to estimate the lengths of jumps they would make if they were those animals. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

  • This resource is valuable for the year 3 mathematics content description about representing and solving problems involving multiplication using efficient mental and written strategies. Students measure and record their own jumping distances and then use multiplicative strategies to estimate their jumping distance, imagining if various animals were scaled to their size.
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 3 mathematics content description about measuring and comparing objects using familiar metric units of length. Students measure the lengths of their own jumps and of a range of animals using centimetres and metres, and convert between units in order to perform calculations for their investigations.
  • This resource is also valuable for the year 3 mathematics content description about collecting data, organising into categories and creating and interpreting data displays. Throughout the sequence, students collect and organise multiple sets of data about their jumping lengths. They record their data in tables, create simple categorical picture graphs using sticky notes, and interpret their data to draw conclusions about how to achieve the longest jump.
  • This resource also offers multiple opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in collecting, recording and displaying data as tables, diagrams, picture graphs and column graphs; estimating and measuring lengths using metric units and scaled instruments; and estimating a solution to a problem and then checking the solution by recalling addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts.
