TLF ID M025308

This sequence of two lessons engages students in comparing lengths of pieces of wool: 'woolly worms'. Students use direct comparison to order their collection of worms from shortest to longest. They learn to order their collection of worms using a variety of strategies, to record lengths using informal units, to draw worms of different lengths and talk about their results. The lesson is outlined in detail including vocabulary, curriculum links, discussion points and further activities. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the Foundation year mathematics content description about using direct and indirect comparisons to decide which of a set of objects is longer, and explaining their reasoning in everyday language. Students are challenged to sort a bag of woolly worms from shortest to longest and explain their reasoning using everyday language.
  • This resource also offers opportunities to link to the Numeracy General capability, as it engages students in measuring by comparing the lengths of their strings and indicate if these measurements are the same or different.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
