Teacher guide reSolve: Multiplication - reSolve Fruit Shop

TLF ID M025297

This sequence of two lessons explores the use of arrays to determine how many objects are in a collection. Students use strategies such as skip counting, repeated addition and partitioning the array into smaller parts. They investigate how some numbers can be represented as an array in different ways. They also explore how some numbers cannot be represented as an array with two or more in each row and column. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 2 mathematics content description about recognising and representing multiplication as repeated addition, groups and arrays. Students explore a variety of arrays in a fruit shop and explore how multiplication can be used to efficiently calculate how many pieces of fruit are in an array,
  • The resource is of value for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to identify, describe and create everyday patterns and use these patterns to model multiplication and addition to help them solve simple problems.
  • This resource is also of pedagogical value as it supports teachers in building an inquiry-focused learning environment with authentic application of mathematical skills and understandings. The unit aims to develop content knowledge as well as assisting students to understand the process of inquiry.
