Teacher guide TrackSAFE Education Primary School Resources: Year 5, Year 6 The Arts

TLF ID M025093

This unit uses dance, drama, visual arts and music to communicate student-created safety messages. Using a community-based scenario, students devise an improvised drama and choreograph a dance to highlight the importance of safe track-side behaviours; they use artworks to explore the effect of colour before creating a cartoon-based advertising campaign; finally students explore the musical elements of nursery rhymes and jingles in order to create the musical backing for a video commercial to promote a track safe message.

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for The Arts curriculum in years 5 and 6. It is particularly useful for the Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama curricula. It is relevant for the Visual Arts content descriptions about: exploring ideas and practices used by artists; and applying techniques and processes when making their artworks. Lesson 2 of the resource engages students in exploring the way colour is used in posters and advertising. They then apply this understanding and create a cartoon character delivering a safety message, for display in trains or stations.
  • The resource is also very useful for the year 5 and 6 Music content descriptions referring to: exploring dynamics and expression, using aural skills to identify and perform rhythm and pitch patterns; and explaining how the elements of music communicate meaning by comparing music from different social, cultural and historical contexts. Lesson 3 of the resource engages students in exploring the elements that make up jingles and nursery rhymes. They then compose, perform and record their own jingle to encourage others in their local community to make wise choices when near train tracks.
  • The resource is also useful for the content description in year 5 and 6 Drama about exploring dramatic action, empathy and space in improvisations, playbuilding and scripted drama to develop characters and situations. In lesson 1, students explore improvisation and devise an improvised drama based on a local community train or track safety scenario. They pay particular attention to developing characters and on how their characters keep themselves and others safe around tracks and trains.
  • The resource is also useful for The Arts Dance curriculum in years 5 and 6. In lesson 1, students choreograph a dance to show the importance of moving in ways to keep theirs and others' body behind the yellow line on a train platform.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to explore, build on and demonstrate their knowledge of about being safe near trains and tracks, through Visual Arts, Music and Drama.
  • This resource is also extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for The Arts in years 5 and 6, it addresses content descriptions within the Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama curricula. Students use improved drama and choreographed dance to show how to stay safe on a train platform, they explore colour and create a cartoon character with a safety message and finally examine how jingles and nursery ryhmes use humour, repetition, meter and rhyme, rhythm and pitch, before composing and recording their own safety jingle.
