Teacher guide TrackSAFE Education Primary School Resources: Year 3 and Year 4 English

TLF ID M025086

This unit of work focuses on behaviour in and around tracks and rail infrastructure. Activities build subject-specific vocabulary and understanding of procedural text structures. Guided writing activities support students to develop a series of track safe procedures while a slogan writing activity focuses on effective ways to communicate the key ideas with others. The activities have a strong emphasis on text structure and encourage the use of a wide range of online tools to write, edit and publish student writing. The unit also provides advice on assessment against the learning intent and outcomes.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the English curriculum in years 3 and 4 as it relates to ten content descriptions across these year levels. It is particularly relevant for the content descriptions that refer to understanding that texts can take different forms or structures and that this helps the text serve its purpose. Lesson 4 engages students in analysing slogans and asks students to consider how visual elements and words are structured to make a slogan 'catchy' and deliver a message to the intended audience.
  • The resource is also highly relevant for the years 3 and 4 English content descriptions about creating informative and persuasive texts using knowledge of text structures and language features. In lessons 3 and 5 of the resource students create a procedural text for a specific audience focused on teaching others how to be safe at level crossings.
  • The resource is also highly useful for the content description about incorporating new vocabulary from a range of sources into students' own texts. In lesson 1, students brainstorm, sort and revise a word list to co-create a vocabulary list for the classroom focussed around rail safety.
  • The learning experiences within the resource are designed sequentially to enable students to develop skills in producing and editing procedures and providing feedback to others so they can improve their writing in this text type. Students create a safety slogan for a target audience of their choice, exploring vocabulary selection and rhyme.
  • This resource is extremely valuable for supporting the Victorian Curriculum for years 3 and 4 English, particularly content descriptions within the Language and Literacy strands. Students are engaged in creating texts including using software and online tools that incoporate symbols, images and sounds, re-reading and editing their own texts, and learning to read and write new words from the TrackSAFE vocabulary.
