Teacher guide reSolve: Algebra: Addition Chain

TLF ID M021837

This sequence of lessons explores making algebraic generalisations of sequences. Students use spreadsheets to investigate potential arithmetic relationships and then use algebra to identify and justify which relationships are generally true. The task can be used as a springboard for an in-depth exploration of the Fibonacci sequence, and develops skills in using spreadsheets. The lessons are outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources such as spreadsheets. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is valuable for supporting the Patterns and algebra substrand of year 8 mathematics. It relates to the content descriptions about factorising and simplifying algebraic expressions. Students investigate additive number patterns, generalise the patterns and manipulate the resulting algebraic expressions using factorisation and simplification.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the general capabilities of Numeracy and Information and Communication Technologies. The lessons provide authentic opportunities for students to apply their understanding of patterns and relationships when solving problems in authentic contexts and use ICT to perform calculations, investigate and model concepts and relationships.
