This lesson aims to build students' algebraic reasoning and understanding of number as they explore computation on the number chart. Students explore the moves of a king chess piece and how the value of the numbers change as he moves. This builds into an algebraic exploration of equivalent values that can be found on the number chart. The lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, discussion points and student handouts. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 4 mathematics content description about applying place value to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers. Students are engaged in an investigation of patterns on a number chart and associative regrouping to explain why these patterns occur.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides opportunities for students to model, represent, order and use numbers and identify and describe patterns.
