This sequence of lessons explores symmetry and three dimensional objects. Students interpret and represent three-dimensional objects in two dimensions and apply their knowledge of transformations to show congruency or difference between objects. The lessons are outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and PowerPoint slides. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for supporting the Measurement and Geometry strand of year 3 mathematics. It is relevant to the content description about making models of three-dimensional objects as students make models of objects using interlocking cubes. It is also relevant to the content description about symmetry as students are challenged to identify which of the models they construct are symmetrical.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to visualise, identify and sort shapes and objects, describing their key features.
