This is a website about the History in Place program which aims to use digital technology to connect teachers and students with their local history or heritage. The resource has three sections: Introductory information; Story Objects; and Story Education Resources. There are 16 Story Objects, all videos that were produced by students participating in the pilot History in Place program. The videos tell the stories of individuals, events and artefacts. The links in the Story Education Resource section provide teachers documentation to enable them run a History in Place program. The resource includes images, videos, photos and links.

Educational value
  • This is a very useful resource for the year 5 and 6 History curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the year 5 content descriptions that refer to the reasons people migrated to Australia from Europe and Asia and the experiences and contributions of a particular migrant group. A number of Story Objects are useful here including: Chinese Festival, Loong The Dragon, and Chinese Musical Instruments. The resource is also very useful for the year 5 and 6 History curriculum content descriptions that refer to: The role that a significant individual or group played in shaping a colony; and the contribution of individuals and groups, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and migrants, to the development of Australian society. A number of Story Objects are relevant here including: Ned Kelly’s armour; The Chaffey Brothers; Dame Nellie Melba; and David Mitchell.
  • The resource is also relevant for the year 9 History curriculum, in particular the content descriptions that refer to: the experiences of men, women and children during the Industrial Revolution; and the living and working conditions in Australia around the turn of the twentieth century. A number of Story Objects are useful here including: Maniero; The Butler; The Dining Room; Fashion in the 1800s; and Good times and bad times a Rio Vista. The Story Objects demonstrate the way of life in Australia at this time.
  • The videos in the Story Objects section have been produced by students who have participated in the History in Place program. The links in the Story Education Resource section provide teacher with documents need to run their own History in Place program. When participating in this program, students use ICT knowledge and skills to produce their own movies about their local history or heritage.
