Teacher guide Narragunnawali: School Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs)

TLF ID M019470

A Reconciliation Action Plan is a formal statement of commitment to reconciliation. As part of the Narragunnawali: Reconciliation in Schools and Early Learning program Reconciliation Australia has created an online tool that supports schools to create their own model for action. The self-service tool uses a framework organised around three key principles: relationships, respect and opportunities and how they are enacted in the classroom, with the community and around the school. The tool supports users to create and build upon their RAP as individual schools or to work collaboratively with two or more schools to create a Cluster RAP. The tool also provides a school reflection survey and the capacity to publish and share their completed RAP online and in PDF format. Schools are required to register to create a RAP.

  • This tool is highly relevant and useful as support for teachers, administrators and school councils and boards developing actions plans for inclusive school communities.
  • The tool provides a practical and useable framework for teachers to develop knowledge and skills in regard to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in relation to understanding and respecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and promoting reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians.
  • The RAP framework would also provide a very useful scaffold to support student understanding of the Citizenship, diversity and identity elements of the Australian Curriculum civics and citizenship education for Years 3 to 10.
