Video Introduction 'Technology' in AgriBusiness (Animation)

TLF ID M019332

This is a video about how Australian farmers embrace technology. Using animation, photographs and commentary with occasional puns and jokes by a primary-school--aged boy, it sets the scene of the overall impact of technology, describes why Australian farmers have always been innovative; provides a definition of technology; and gives examples of technology in farming. An historical example of the invention of the stump-jump plough is followed by a contemporary example of the breeding of a 'perfect prawn' by the CSIRO. The fast-paced video lasts for 2:23 min and ends with a summary of three improvements technology in agriculture have brought about in caring for the environment, increasing farming output, and building farmers' incomes.

Educational details

Educational value
  • Intended for mid to upper primary school students, this resource highlights the importance of technology in agriculture, both today and in the past, and has considerable value for the Design and Technologies curriculum and to a lesser extent, for the History and Science curriculums. In Design and Technologies, the black tiger prawn example is directly relevant to the years 3/4 content description that refers to recognising the role of people in technologies occupations, and the broader discussion of technology in agriculture supports the content descriptions about food production in years 3/4 and 5/6.
  • The video's description of the importance of the stump-jump plough in 19th century Australian agriculture is of value for the year 3 History content description that refers to one important example of change in the local community, region or state/territory; for example, in relation to work. The stump-jump plough was invented by Richard Bowyer Smith (1837-1919) and as the video correctly states, it revolutionised Australian agriculture.
  • The resource is also of value for the Science as a human endeavour strand in year 5 Science, especially the content description that refers to scientific discoveries and inventions being used to solve problems that directly affect people's lives.
