This is a unit of work about using design, technology and innovation to improve agricultural methods. Learning activities include: examining technology used on farms, exploring a virtual farm, looking at careers in the field of agricultural technology, examining current problems experienced in agriculture and looking at how production methods could be improved. The resource includes: a teacher guide; a presentation about technology in Australia; a presentation about problems faced by agriculture and a set of technology cards. Educational value
  • This is a highly useful resource for the year 7 and 8 Design and Technologies curriculum. It is particularly relevant for the content description that refers to analysing how food and fibre are produced and how production methods can become more sustainable. Work tasks 1, 2 and 3 of the resource are relevant here, they include learning opportunities for students to explore technology used on farms, particularly technology that is being used to ensure increased production and sustainability.
  • The resource is also highly relevant for the content description that refers to investigating the ways products, services and environments evolve through the creativity, innovation and enterprise of individuals and groups. Work tasks 3b, 4 and 5 of the resource are useful here. Students explore: careers related to agricultural technology; how technology has been used to provide greater productivity and sustainability; and how technology has enabled farmers to overcome problems in agriculture.
  • The resource may also have relevance for to the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority, particularly the organising idea that refers to designing action for sustainability requires an evaluation of past practices, the assessment of scientific and technological developments on projected future economic, social and environmental impacts. Work task 4 of the resource is relevant here as it involves students in looking at how technology can be used to improve agricultural practices.
