Educational value
  • The use of this resource depends on the age and stage of learning. Aspects of the resource could be used by teachers with very young students, such as locating war memorials or honour boards in the local community and developing students’ understanding of the features and significance of these. For older primary students the class as a whole could identify a local veteran to research with the teacher supporting students to research an aspect of their story. As a class they can then present this information in a variety of ways, including through illustrated story and drama. This investigation could be supported by parents and the wider community; as a result people in the community may choose to use the resource to research an Australian Imperial Force veteran. High school students can use the resource with the teacher as a facilitator and sounding board for their findings. Schools and communities can choose to use the research findings in a wide variety of ways that engages school and community. Note: Due to the chronology of learning for students 7-10, there are no history references that can be used in Stage 4.
