This is a year 3 mathematics unit of work about saving and budgeting for a class party. The unit is intended to take about 10.5 hours of teaching and learning time spread over some months. It consists of nine student activities supported by teacher notes on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. Student activities include creating a spreadsheet; performing mental calculations involving addition, subtraction and multiplication; working through spending and budgeting scenarios; and planning purchases for the party.   • This resource is of value for the Number and Algebra and the Statistics and Probability strands of the year 3 mathematics curriculum. Its context of saving for a class party is likely to remain engaging for the duration of the unit. Its student activities are relevant for content descriptions and elements of the year 3 achievement standard that refer, directly or indirectly, to using mental strategies for addition, subtraction and multiplication; representing money values in multiple ways; counting change required for simple transactions; collecting data, organising them into categories and creating displays with the use of digital technologies.
  • The resource has considerable value for a number of the general capabilities, connecting with the organising elements of comprehending texts (literacy), estimating and calculating with whole numbers (numeracy), creating with ICT and managing and operating ICT (ICT capability), social management (personal and social capability), and inquiring - identifying, exploring and organising information and ideas (critical and creative thinking).
  • The resource is also very useful for the National Consumer and Financial Literacy Framework. It supports learnings at band 4 in all three dimensions of the Framework.
